Haven Cassidy is a proud cockney who goes to the “extremely posh” Hampstead School for Girls. Her penchant for snooping makes her a prime candidate to join The Guild and she’s dropped into a world of spies, villains and magic.

I liked Haven, she is a confident and standout main character. Her cockney roots and phrases makes her unique amongst the characters in the book as well as amongst other adventure story main characters. It’s a nice way to introduce readers to the language and the glossary at the start of the book will be useful for readers.
It’s positive to see a character like Haven stand out from her peers but be confident with it, it highlights the importance of being true to yourself without it needing to be said directly. The illustrations throughout are dynamic and help to bring the cast of characters to life. Our Children in the Shadows is an entertaining adventure.
There's lots of twists to keep you hooked and it is a great first book to start a series. A solid recommendation for any middle grade reader who enjoys spy stories, mysteries and fantasy.

Haven Cassidy’s fidgety fingers twiddled her brunette bob. She was short for a twelve-year-old and pale for someone still breathing. She wore an emerald green jacket like all the girls at Hampstead, but trousers instead of a skirt. They had pockets for her gadgets and goodies.
CASSIDY’S A WEIRDO. She was hiding in a toilet cubicle, gawping at the charming graffiti. It was time for science, but she picked the lavatory over the laboratory, and not for the first time either. Not that she minded learning about atoms and elements, etc. - it’s just that she much preferred going on MISSIONS. Nothing brought her more joy than sneakiness.
