Acclaimed author-illustrator Sarah Massini uses sumptuous digital watercolours and a warmly immersive colour palette to tell this fabelic story of bravery, empathy, and compassion.
This picturebook is at once a magical adventure about three children – or child-cubs – who befriend a grumpy tiger and ride on his back through the jungle, and a surprisingly tender story about lowering your barriers, letting people in, and trusting that the best people will love you for who you are. For our tiger doesn't think of himself as daring or fearless, like all the other tigers – it is his growing affection for the child-cubs that helps him discover the many meanings of not only bravery, but kindness.
Once Upon a Tiger also explores the notion of home – the tiger bravely delivers the child-cubs home to their village, and as hard as it is to say goodbye, the call of his own wild home is too loud to ignore. This narrative beat is ideal for reflecting on themes of connection, belonging, and letting go.
Readers of Wild , Where the Wild Things Are and The Tiger Who Came to Tea will enjoy this wild and wonderful picturebook.
A beautiful, moving tale about kindness and bravery that has all the hallmarks of a modern classic.
