Suave, sophisticated and intelligent, Clover Twig is the perfect hero to set against the somewhat unkempt, ill-mannered and unruly witch society in and around Tingly Bottom. Working as a maligned skivvy for Mrs Eckles, Clover Twig overhears the rumour that the perilous path has returned. The subject of a warning (‘Woe! Seven Times Woe Betide All Ye Who Walk the Perilous Path!’) the path is the stuff of witch legends.
Clover is brought into unexpected proximity to the path when his younger brother Herby goes missing. A furiously fast-paced and funny adventure unfolds, populated with witty and weird characters. Drawing on carnivalesque and pantomime traditions, there’s an exuberant quality to the narrative and to the humour that abounds here. This is Kaye Umansky at her wicked, witty and witchy best!
