Chosen by Jacqueline Wilson, our Guest Editor May 2023 : "This was one of my childhood favourites - and although it's dated in many ways I think many girls will still love this story of three orphans brought up together and sent to stage school so they can earn their own livings. I could never make up my mind which sister I liked the best - pretty blonde Pauline who's a brilliant actress, dark tomboy Petrova who hates performing on the stage and wants to fly aeroplanes, or red-haired Posy who's a wonderful ballet dancer. Noel Streatfeild sucks you into the story and makes you care passionately about all three sisters."
Also chosen by Sally Nicholls, March 2012 Guest Editor : "All of my novels are about families, and Ballet Shoes is at its heart a family story. I loved this book as a child, and it was the family I loved most; the Fossil sisters, growing up in a tall house in Cromwell Road filled with an odd collection of people who love them."
The Lovereading comment:
A timeless and magical read that celebrates the 75th anniversary of its first publication. It's also one of Jacqueline Wilson's all time favourite reads. Definitely a masterpiece in our opinion so make sure this 75th anniversary edition of one of the classics of all time is introduced to a new generation of readers and dance lovers.
'I wonder ...if other girls had to be one of us, which of us they'd choose to be'? Pauline longs to be an actress. Petrova is happiest playing with cars and engines.

'A masterpiece' - Telegraph
'Ballet Shoes is one of my all-time favourite children's books - and you don't have to be a ballet fan to enjoy it.' - Dame Jacqueline Wilson
Mary Noel Streatfeild OBE (December 24, 1895–September 11, 1986), known as Noel Streatfeild, was an author, most famous for her talent of writing children's books including Ballet Shoes (1936). She was born in Sussex, England, the second of three daughters of a local vicar. Her life is described in three semi-autobiographical novels: A Vicarage Family, Away from the Vicarage and Beyond the Vicarage. Noel was considered the "plain" sister in her family, but she shone in performances with her sisters for charity. Upon reaching adulthood she sought a career in theatre, and gained ten years of experience as an actress, working for the Charles Doran and Arthur Bourchier companies. Her familiarity with the stage was the basis for many of her popular books for children, which are often about children struggling with careers in the arts.
In 1969 London Weekend Television produced a six-episode serial of "The Growing Summer", with Wendy Hiller as Aunt Dymphna. It was filmed in Bantry (Bantry House), in Ahakista and near Kilcrohane on the Sheep's Head Peninsula.
Noel Streatfeild was appointed an Officer of the Order of the British Empire (OBE) in 1983.
