Margaret McAllister lives in West Yorkshire with her husband, a practicing Minister. With a background in teaching, Margaret, has always enjoyed making up stories and in the early nineties found the time to put these down on paper. Her first book A Friend for Rachel (re-titled as The Secret Mice ) was published in 1997 by Oxford University Press. Margaret has since gone on to publish further novels with OUP (including many literacy titles in their Reading Tree series) as well as with Bloomsbury and Puffin.
With favourite authors including Jane Austen, C. S. Lewis, Elizabeth Goudge and Jerome K. Jerome, it is no surprise that Margaret enjoys writing historical and fantasy fiction. Margaret is known for her Mistmantle Chronicles , the first of which – Urchin of the Riding Stars – was shortlisted for the Ottakar’s Children’s Book Prize, as well as The Life Shop and High Crag Linn for Lion Children’s Books. Most recently Margaret has published the Hammy the Wonder Hamster series under the pseudonym Poppy Harris for Puffin, and The Lion Classic Aesop’s Fables for Lion (September 2011).
In addition to writing, Margaret enjoys dance, theatre, music and history, and is currently learning how to play the piano.
