After the initial sighting, our ground and aerial teams combed the landscape. We were able to locate the pack’s den site and kept close watch on the area. Finally, Roan spotted her returning home from a hunt.
This is what happened after that sighting. The northern part of Tsavo is marked by very dense bush, so the helicopter shepherded the whole pack to an open area, where Dr Limo of the SWT/KWS Tsavo Mobile Vet Unit was waiting to dart her.
Wild dogs are incredible animals. The snare had been slicing into her body for a long time, but still she supported her pack and went out to hunt each day. In partnership with the Kenya Wildlife Service, it was a privilege to support her in her hour of need. She rejoined her pack and is expected to make a full recovery.
