AAWRE Writes: “Don J. Wood, Ph.D., Hon.D.WRE, F.ASCE – Dr. Wood is a Professor Emeritus of Civil Engineering at the University of Kentucky and the Director of the Civil Engineering Software Center. Don received his Ph.D. from Carnegie Mellon University and is the author of over 110 technical papers dealing with steady state and transient flow. Dr. Wood has made notable contributions to the field of hydraulic engineering and was a pioneer in water distribution systems modeling.”
“Over the span of nearly half a century, Dr. Wood has made extraordinary and innovative contributions to hydraulic engineering, and his notable research has led to fundamental advances that have shaped the current practice on water distribution systems analysis. He conceived a unique Lagrangian approach that revolutionized hydraulic transient analysis of large and complex water distribution systems as well as the Linear Theory (Flow Adjustment) Method of reliably and accurately solving steady-state pressures and flows in piping systems. In 1985, Dr. Wood founded the Civil Engineering Software Center at the University of Kentucky, which has maintained a prominent position in the waterworks industry through its strong record of innovation, value and quality. During his long and extraordinary professional career, he has received many prestigious honors, including the ASCE 2004 Simon Freeze Award.”
Dr. Wood reflected: “I had the good fortune of having Dr. Thomas Stelson as a professor at Carnegie Tech (Mellon University). He presented a single lecture describing transient pipe flow in terms of pressure waves. I was fascinated by the topic and did my Ph.D research and thesis on pressure waves in pipes under Dr. Stelson’s direction. This work led to the development of the revolutionary and very efficient Wave Method for analyzing transients in piping systems. Dr. Stelson went on to be Dean and Executive Vice President at Georgia Tech and was a founding member of Hong Kong University of Science and Technology.” ( http://www.aawre.org , 2011)
Dr. Wood is one of only sixteen distinguished engineering professionals worldwide to receive AAWRE’s highest honor.
The following paragraph from the article explains the project.
“SSIS was subsequently commissioned to compile a hydraulic model of the Withoogte to Besaanklip pipeline in order to mimic the steady state and transient behavior of the pipeline following various operational scenarios. The hydraulic model was compiled using the Surge 2010 analysis software and calibrated against actual measured pressure data captured on site using Remote Transient Pressure Monitors (RTPM).”
The field test consisted of opening and closing various control valves in the pipeline. Several plots comparing measured results and model predictions follow.
