We were speaking with a senior manager who is hiring recently and is using all the tricks in the book to look for candidates. Social media, previous candidates, referrals, job boards, she had it covered. But in chatting, by chance, she mentioned she hardly ever uses the phone nowadays. That's crazy, why not? we said. The phone is still highly valuable in getting real-time, one-to-one conversations as people are being bombarded by so many endless emails, IMs, and social media noise. As a quick reminder, let's see why the phone is still a great comms tool: • It’s personal and allows you to portray your character, style and tone • If you are faced with a complex situation • When you need to get a quick result • For sensitive or delicate situations • It allows for questions and objection handling So as a timely nudge for you and your team, what about calling your team when it’s: • Their birthday • A work anniversary • The delivery of a Project or ‘Go Live’ • Just before they leave your company or end their contract • For a regular or ad hoc check-in • After they have left to make sure they are doing well When hiring for talent people often get lazy by sending emails, LinkedIn messages or placing adverts. These often don’t get a response, so instead why not use the phone to: • Call your existing team for referrals • Phone candidates who used to work with you to ask them back • Try again if you can’t get through the first time, at a different time or day • Send a text or WhatsApp message. • Leave a voicemail So lastly, here are just 3 questions to ask yourself: • When was the last time you spoke to one of your team on the phone? • Has there been someone overlooked or forgotten about? • When was the last time you asked how they were?
