Our rangers spend their days, and some nights, out on patrol. Operating in hot and dry conditions, where the temperature often exceeds 40 degrees Celsius, it is essential that they remain hydrated. Robust, camouflaged water hydration packs ensure the rangers can carry an ample supply of water for foot patrols. It also eradicates the need for plastic bottles!
As well as being a delicious treat, lucerne pellets are important dietary supplements, especially for the older elephant orphans during drier periods in Tsavo, when fresh browse is less readily available.
The orphans at our three Reintegration Units require a special follow-on formula milk which comes in sacks. As they grow, so do their appetites! Your gift can help feed these growing youngsters until they are reintegrated to the wild.
Every night we line the stables at our Nairobi Nursery and Kaluku Neonate Unit with hay so the youngest orphans feel warm and cosy at night. Lucerne bales also provide a delicious and nutritious snack for older orphans.
Rescued orphan elephants in our care require specialist milk formula to survive and our Keepers bottle feed the Nursery orphans freshly mixed milk every three hours, day and night. Your gift can help us provide 2 bottles of milk – enough for one milk feed for one orphan.
We use wheelbarrows to transport the many bottles of milk from the mixing bay to the orphans at every feed. Every wheelbarrow is custom made with big tyres for extra traction along the rugged terrain.
