1.24 If 4 identical pipes (of the same material, diameter, thickness, etc.) join at a junction node, and a pressure wave of magnitude 50m approaches the junction node from one of the pipes, what is the magnitude and sign of the reflected pressure wave?

Refer to Figure 1.20 in Section 1.5 Wave Action at Junctions.

Use Eq. 1.40 with F 1 = F 2­ = F 3 = F 4 = F (pipe elastic factors) to first calculate the transmission coefficient.

T = (2/F) / (4/F) = 0.5

Refection coefficient: R = T – 1 = -0.5

If ∆H represents the incoming pressure wave, the reflected pressure wave R∆H = -25m.
