G.15 A flywheel was assembled by welding 4 slender spokes to a short hollow thick-walled cylinder. The outer diameter of the cylinder is 1000 mm and the inner diameter 900 mm. Compute the weight moment of inertia WR 2 of the flywheel neglecting the effect of axle and spokes assembly.

Weight moment of inertia WR 2 of flywheel is the polar weight moment of inertia of the cylinder, neglecting the contribution from other components.

I zw = I zw(cylinder)

I zw = W cylinder * (1/2) (r 2 2 + r 1 2 )

W cylinder = 3425.535 N, r 1 = 0.5m, r 2 = 0.45m

I zw = 775.027 N-m 2
