It then derives the mutually beneficial terms-of-trade range, applies a price inside that range, and shows each producer's autarky bundle, specialization, post-trade consumption and gain — with the consumption-possibilities line drawn outside each producer's own frontier and a step-by-step derivation you can follow line by line.
Absolute advantage means a producer can make more of a good with the same resources, or make one unit with fewer labor hours. Comparative advantage means a producer gives up less of the other good to make it — a lower opportunity cost. A producer can hold the absolute advantage in both goods and still have the comparative advantage in only one.
Divide what you give up by what you gain. With maximum outputs, the opportunity cost of one unit of good X is the maximum of good Y divided by the maximum of good X. With labor hours, it is the hours per unit of X divided by the hours per unit of Y.
The price of one unit of good X must lie strictly between the two producers' opportunity costs of good X. Inside that range the exporter receives more than its own cost and the importer pays less than its own cost, so both producers gain from trade.
When each producer specializes in the good it makes at the lower opportunity cost and then trades at a price inside the mutually beneficial range, both end up consuming a bundle outside their own production possibilities curve. That extra consumption is the gain from trade.
