This text is THE resource for PSW/HCA education programs. It is also an essential resource for on-the-job learning and for those who want to delve deeper. It covers most common serious illnesses, particularly dementia, and provides all the practical tools for assessment and communication that a PSW/HCA would ever need. It includes all the topics that are most relevant to the PSW, often in more depth and breadth than nursing and medical texts, but it is thorough and all the information is entirely appropriate. The clear style, with extensive use of personal stories, ethical, cultural and competency “touchstones”, and explanatory illustrations make it easy to read and, despite having an incredible depth of up to date content, it is not overwhelming.

This is a wonderful textbook for nursing students and for nurses entering practice. It is practical and uses helpful case studies, artwork, tables, scales and other supplemental resources that emphasize important concepts. While being extremely helpful academically, it also promotes primary palliative care concepts of listening, being present, bearing witness, and advocating for those with serious illness and their families—all reminders of the vital, sacred work that nurses are privileged to do every day.
